Steno on Legaltech Hub: Product Briefing–Steno Transcript Genius 2026 Update

A year ago, Steno’s Joe Stephens, JD, sat down with Legaltech Hub to walk through Transcript Genius, Steno’s AI-driven transcript analysis tool. Legaltech Hub invited him back for a 2026 product briefing to see what has changed.

The briefing pairs a written product breakdown with a live demo, hosted by Legaltech Hub Director of Content Stephanie Wilkins. It covers where Transcript Genius came from, how it fits into Steno's broader technology stack, and the year's headline addition: syncing transcript text directly to deposition video, then cutting that testimony into clips, all included in the standard cost of booking a deposition.

Here's an excerpt from the piece:

Deposition transcripts serve as the evidentiary record of litigation. Attorneys and their teams spend substantial time preparing for depositions, taking them effectively, and then working with whatever ends up in that record. Once a transcript exists, the challenge shifts to extracting value from it: the record is often long, the information dense, and the manual work of summarizing and mining it for relevant material can consume hours that legal teams could otherwise spend on substantive case strategy.

In the past year, Steno added a feature that syncs the text of a transcript to its corresponding video, letting users see not just what a witness said but how they said it, including pauses and hesitation. Stephens described this as turning a two-dimensional record into a three-dimensional one.

Joe carried that same idea into the demo, walking Wilkins through a live transcript interrogation before showing how a single answer becomes a trial-ready clip.

"None of what you're seeing here comes at any additional cost," he said. "We've built these features in-house. They're not bolted on. They're deeply integrated into our tech stack so trial teams can maximize the work they're already doing when they're prepping for a deposition and then taking that deposition."

That in-house build is also what keeps the product narrow by design. Joe has heard the pitch for doing more and consistently pushes back.

"It's not designed to do a million things across the board," he said. "It's really designed to focus on one or two or three things and execute those brilliantly."
